Detroit, Michigan
Detroit sits atop the pile of asthma capitals in the country. In 2022, the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America (AAFA) classified this city as the most challenging zone to live in for people with respiratory disorders. In 2021, Detroit was ranked 15th on AAFA’s list, meaning that its condition, in terms of asthma triggers, has become progressively worse over a year. It ranks among the top 25 cities in the country in terms of asthma-related emergency hospital visits. It also ranks in the top 10 in terms of asthma-related new cases and deaths per year.

The reason for this? Detroit’s overall air quality is among the poorest when compared to other cities across the country. Additionally, high poverty rates also contribute to making Detroit one of the worst cities for asthma patients.

Cleveland, Ohio
While Cleveland may not match Detroit’s numbers and rankings, this city also features very high on the list of daily asthma cases, deaths, and ICU admissions. Like Detroit, Cleveland’s air quality and ozone levels are also very poor. This city failed to meet the US Environment Protection Agency (EPA) air quality standards that measure ozone and particulate matter (PM2.5). Cleveland’s economic scenario and high ozone generation are key components that contribute to the city’s asthma capital status. Thus, the city has many people with uncontrolled asthma and many quick-relief asthma treatment users.

Allentown, Pennsylvania
In AAFA’s 2021 list, Allentown was ranked number one. Detroit’s progressive air quality worsening has pushed Allentown to third place. However, this Pennsylvania city still is one of the worst places in the country for people with asthma. The city’s ranking is due to relatively lax smoking laws and the high percentage of pollen grains in Allentown’s air. These factors contribute to the high number of asthmatic people needing emergency attention.
